Presentation of life at MONT MAYON

His history

Mount Mayon is a volcano located in the province of Albay, in the Bicol region of the Philippines. It is famous for its almost perfectly conical shape due to the accumulation of layers of ash, lava and volcanic rocks during eruptions. Making it one of the most iconic and active volcanoes in the Philippines.

The slopes of Mount Mayon are often covered in lush tropical vegetation, including forests, coconut palms and agricultural crops. This contrasts beautifully with the conical shape of the volcano.

Mayon Volcano is approximately 2,462 meters high, and it is located near the town of Legazpi. Due to its volcanic activity, it is closely monitored by the Philippine authorities (PHIVOLCS), and measures are taken to evacuate local populations in the event of a threat of a major eruption.

His Legend

Mount Mayon is associated with an interesting and romantic Filipino legend, known as the Legend of Daragang Magayon. This legend is often told to explain the origin of the volcano's name and its characteristic beauty.

According to the legend of Daragang Magayon, which means "the beautiful lady" in Bicolano (the language of the region where Mount Mayon is located), there was a beautiful young woman named Magayon. Magayon was the daughter of a local chief, and her beauty was famous throughout the region. Many
Suitors courted her, but she fell in love with a young man called Panganoron.

However, their love was thwarted by a feud between their family clans. Unfortunately, this feud turned into violent conflict, and Panganoron was killed in the battle. Upon learning of her beloved's death, Magayon was devastated and decided to end her own life.

She climbed Mount Mayon and threw herself into the volcano's crater, preferring death to life without Panganoron. Legend says that the Mayon volcano was born from the sadness of Magayon. Her sacrifice became a symbol of beauty and tragedy, and the name "Mayon" is derived from "Magayon."

The legend of Daragang Magayon, is one of the most famous, but there are other stories and legends related to the Mayon volcano, often passed down from generation to generation by the inhabitants of the Bicol region of the Philippines. These legends contribute to the rich culture and history of Mount Mayon, adding cultural and mystical significance to this
majestic volcanic mountain.
